The Lagos State House of Assembly is demanding urgent action to rescue Binuyo Lateefah, a young graduate who was kidnapped while traveling for her National Youth Service (NYSC). Lateefah was snatched on January 22 around Kogi State while on her way to Taraba for her service year. The kidnappers have since contacted her family, demanding a massive N30 million ransom for her release.
Lawmaker Omolara Olumegbon, who first raised the alarm, called for Governor Sanwo-Olu to quickly team up with the Kogi State Governor to track her down. She also urged the Federal Government to step up security on highways, especially for “corpers” traveling long distances to serve their country. Other members of the House praised the military’s recent successes but insisted that more must be done to protect these young citizens.
The Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, described the situation as “heartbreaking.” He pointed out how painful it is that students who have worked hard to finish their education are being targeted by criminals when they should be celebrated. He suggested that the NYSC Director-General should be held responsible for the safety of these young Nigerians from the moment they leave home until they return.
There is also a growing call for the NYSC to rethink its posting policy. Lawmaker Tobun Abiodun suggested that the National Assembly should look into stopping the deployment of graduates to far-away or dangerous “high-risk” areas. The goal is to make sure no more lives are put in danger just to fulfill the mandatory one-year service.
The Kogi State Police have confirmed the kidnapping and say they are working hard to get her back. While they couldn’t share many details for security reasons, they assured the public that the search is ongoing. For now, Lateefah’s family and the Lagos Assembly remain hopeful for a swift and safe rescue.
