Peter Obi Challenges President Tinubu on Power Sector Failures, Reminds Him of “Performance or Exit” Election Pledge

In a sharp rebuke issued on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, former presidential candidate Peter Obi characterized Nigeria’s ongoing power instability as a “national shame” and a clear sign of leadership failure. He highlighted that the national grid has already collapsed twice in the first few weeks of the new year, a troubling continuation of the twelve system failures recorded throughout 2025.

Obi specifically called out President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for failing to honor a 2022 campaign pledge. He reminded the public of the President’s promise to forgo a second term if he could not deliver a steady electricity supply within his first four years in office, describing the current reality as a “sharp contradiction” of that commitment.

The criticism also touched on the President’s international travels, specifically referencing a recent visit to Turkey. Obi highlighted the “painful” disparity between Turkey’s electricity output of over 120,000 megawatts and Nigeria’s generation, which remains less than five percent of that figure despite Nigeria having a much larger population.

Urging the President to prioritize domestic issues, Obi advised the administration to “stay at home” and confront the nation’s fundamental problems. He expressed concern that governance failures are being overlooked as the political class shifts its focus toward the next election cycle rather than addressing the immediate suffering of the people.

Obi concluded his statement by calling for greater accountability and a collective effort to save Nigerians from the indignity of “persistent bad governance.” Maintaining his usual optimistic stance, he reiterated his belief that a “New Nigeria” is still possible through responsible leadership.
