Police Inspector Slain During Oyo Kidnap Rescue

A high-stakes rescue operation in Olorunda Village, Oyo West, turned tragic on January 24, 2026, when a police inspector lost his life in a shootout with kidnappers. The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that the officer was fatally wounded while bravely engaging a gang of armed criminals who had invaded a local residence to abduct a citizen.

The crisis began in the early hours of the morning when the command received an emergency call reporting the kidnapping of Haruna Lawal. The suspects had forcibly taken Lawal from his home and fled into the bush, stealing his motorcycle in the process. This prompted an immediate tactical response ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna.

As police operatives closed in on the hideout, the intense pressure forced the kidnappers to abandon their captive. While the victim was successfully recovered, he had sustained a significant head injury during the ordeal. He was quickly transported to the General Hospital in Oyo, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment.

The confrontation resulted in a fierce exchange of gunfire, during which the gallant inspector was killed. Police reports indicate that several of the kidnappers likely escaped with gunshot wounds. A massive manhunt has since been launched across the region to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

In the wake of the incident, the Oyo State Police Command reaffirmed its dedication to public safety despite the heavy cost of this mission. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any individuals seen with suspicious injuries, emphasizing that community intelligence remains vital in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
